Description of game:
An extremely spirited Gainsborough Academy team battled through the game against a very strong and physical Sleaford team to suffer heartache in a penalty shootout.
A bright start by both teams saw half chances being created at both ends but as the half develop Carr’s Grammar took control of possession. Solid defence by Zac, Robbie, Declan and Evan with assured saves by Louise denied their forwards of any clear cut chances. Gainsborough always look dangerous on the counter attack and half way through the first half a superb passing move from the two Brads set up Elliott with his first chance which he neatly tucked away. The lead was not held long as Carr’s camped in our half and threaten our goal. Despite some brave decision by the linesman and brave defending the equalizer was conceded.
There than followed a period of pressure from Gainsborough which saw a number of chances being created and corners by the team. Scott delivered one of these corners right on top of the keeper, who from pressure by our forwards spilled the ball for Elliot to bag his Second.
Almost after the kick-off Carr’s went downfield to equalize again. Towards the end of the half Gainsborough made to string a number of passes together go the left hand side and a smart ball from Brad H set up Elliott who needed no second invitation to find the back of the net with a clinical finish.
Half time brought a well-deserved rest, the team had battled well to secure this lead and focus and concentration was needed for the second half. Unfortunately this advice was not heeded as within a couple of minutes after the restart Carrs Grammar were level again!! The defence were fantastic throughout the second half resisting constant pressure from the opponents. Only a very late free kick from Elliott and a chance to chip the keeper by Brad H were the only chances to prevent the inevitable penalties.
Honours were shared with the first six spot kicks, Brad R , Elliott and Brad H expertly tucked away their penalties. A miss by Carrs raised hopes of a victory. The normal unflappable Scott Hutchinson stepped up only to disappoint and dash our hopes of a victory. His spot kick resembled a back pass and the keeper had no trouble picking up the ball that barely reached him.
Evan converted a fine penalty to keep hopes alive but an unlucky Robbie skied his kick over the cross bar to give Carr’s victory.
A cruel way to be knocked out of the cup after all the hard work and skill displayed by the whole team.
